Race points
These are awarded based on an ideal time for each age and gender category. The ideal time is calculated as the average time of the first three runners in that age/gender category. The ideal time for each Baildon Runner is divided by that runner’s time and multiplied by 1,000 to get the total points for that race. This means that men and women can compete in the same league. The best 8 races in the championship count for each runner.
For example, take an MV40 runner who ran 26:49 in a race. First the times are converted from min:s to min.
Min:s Min
First MV40 17:21 17.35
Second MV40 18:50 18.83
Third MV40 19:07 19.12
Average: 18.43
Our runner 26:49 26.82 18.43/26.82 = 0.687 0.687 x 1000 = 687
So the ideal time is the average of the first three times (18.43). This time is then divided by the runner’s time 18.43/26.82 = 0.687 and then multiplied by 1,000 to give him 687 points.
This system means that every second saved means extra points so a big incentive to run for the line. I’ve got a vision of loads of Baildon Runners "dipping" for the line at the end of a long fell race.
The exception to this is when there are fewer than three runners in a category (typically FV60) in which case the three fastest times from the next category up are used (FV55 or FV50 for this example).
Joker races
There are a number of races for which a runner’s points for that race will be doubled. A runner can only do this on one race. Where runners run more than one joker race their best total for the joker races is automatically doubled.
Persistence award
The runner who runs most races will be awarded a bonus 500 points.
